It’s that time of year again! If your parents, your mom or your dad want to spend time with you and your family during the holidays and they are living in an assisted living facility or nursing home, there are a few things you will want to be aware of in order to pull this off and allow them (and you) to have a pleasant time! If you prepare beforehand, then you shouldn’t run into any major problems. First off, if one of your parents is a diabetic, they are probably looking forward to a nice yummy home cooked meal.

The problem with this is that he or she might not be able to eat the same foods that you are serving – so make sure you plan a meal that they can participate in eating as well. Also, make sure you have just enough diabetes test strips so you can keep things under control.

If your parents have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, problems swallowing or even any dietary restrictions, it’s always a good thing to talk to the dietitian at the nursing home to give you ideas on what things you can server or how to go about the eating situation. You are probably going to need some nursing home supply options or medical supplies as well.

One thing you might want to keep at hand is a blood pressure monitor. Sure, there are professional blood pressure monitors that can cost a fortune, but there are also quite a few basic ones for home use. Taking your parents’ blood pressure regularly will help you stay on top of their condition and foresee any changes.

Also, if your mom or dad have a problem with incontinence, you might want to consider buying adult disposable briefs. The nursing home may send you some as well – but it’s important to make sure they are available either way. There are great products on the markets and some of the most reliable brands you might want to look at will be Kendall and TENA.

If your parents will be staying for a few days, it’s important to have medical supplies such as dressing changes, compression packs, or even colostomy supplies. Again, it’s a good idea to talk with the nurses to make sure you have all the medical supplies you will need before the special day comes!

If your parent lives on their own, they probably won’t need a lot of the medical supplies that an assisted living resident or nursing home resident would need. If anything, and your parent does live on their own, it’s always a good idea to personally ask them if they need anything specific in order to make their stay more pleasant. The next thing you may be wondering about is WHERE to buy these medical supplies! Good question. For some companies and businesses you may actually have to be a licensed health professional or organization.

Also, if you think that you might have trouble taking care of your parents for Christmas (or any holiday) you can hire an aid or a nurse from a staffing company while your parents are out of the nursing home. They can also help you pick out which products you may need to buy in order to make their time more comforting.

You could even take a look at a blog or ask them questions about what you might need or what products or bands to choose from when deciding on medical supplies or nursing home supplies. The main point here is that Christmas is a really important time to bring your parents home for a nice home-holiday. Give them a break from all the craziness and simply let them enjoy their time with you, your children and your family – and if you need help buying medical supplies to make the trip all that much better, there is help available and it’s only a click away!

So, you’ve seen the ads, and you’re interested. This liposuction thing sounds pretty good. You have a little bit of weight you’d like to lose, and you think that getting it removed surgically sounds great. The only question is, are you a good candidate for the surgery?

You certainly aren’t alone in being interested in liposuction (which is also referred to as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy). Hundreds of thousands of Americans from Beverly Hills to New York undergo the surgery every year.

A number of things help to determine whether or not someone is a good candidate for lipoplasty. The first is general health. The best patients are in relatively good health. They are free from conditions or habits that would interfere with their healing. Some examples of conditions that can interfere with a person’s ability to undergo the surgery include diabetes, heart and lung conditions, and serious chronic diseases. Habits that increase lipoplasty risks include smoking.

Second, the ideal patient is fairly close to their target weight. A lipoplasty is not well-suited to removing large volumes of fat. The best patients are within 25 or 30 pounds of their ideal weight, and they are looking for small, localized fixes rather than total body weight loss. People who are seriously overweight or who struggle with obesity would do well to try to lose some weight before they consider undergoing a lipectomy. Then, once they’ve lost some weight, they can use the surgery to help target any remaining problem spots.

The ideal lipectomy patient similarly has an understanding of the procedure and realistic goals concerning the outcomes. Although the surgery can often provide significant improvement in a person’s appearance, it can very rarely offer perfection, and people who expect to come off of the table with a flawless appearance will generally be disappointed.

The ideal patient is emotionally stable and isn’t getting the surgery because he or she is hoping to fix their self-image. Inner peace typically comes from mental shifts, not from surgical changes to external appearance.

The ideal patient also has the fiscal resources necessary to undergo the surgery. You can’t really get a lipoplasty without money.

Finally, the ideal patient needs to be willing to follow all of the doctor’s orders. If a patient is willing to be entirely honest and forthcoming with his surgeon and is willing to follow the surgeon’s health suggestions, he or she is much more likely to have a successful and safe surgery.

When it comes to making and sticking to workout routines, schedules often have to be creatively arranged to make sure you get an effective workout. In today’s busy world, it can be hard to find time to devote to strength training programs. Many women focus on finding time to fit in a cardiovascular workout rather than undergo female strength training.

It’s true that the benefits of aerobic exercise are numerous and have wide-ranging beneficial effects on the body and mind. But if you can spare some minutes during the day just a few times each week to also undergo some strength training, your body will thank you even more.

Myths of Strength Training Programs

Many women believe that if they go work on strength training, they’ll develop big, bulky muscles and appear less feminine. But this isn’t the case. Very few women have enough natural testosterone or the larger, stronger fast-twitch muscle fibers that men possess to develop large muscles. In reality, women will simply develop firmer muscles for a trimmer physique and better overall strength.

Another myth is that female strength training should be avoided because women either aren’t able to develop strong muscles, or their bodies are unable to handle strength training programs. Again, neither of these myths is true. Of course women can develop strong muscles! However, with workout routines, schedules are very important because you don’t want to take on too much weight or too many repetitions at first. Slowly work into it to build up your strength and reduce the risk of injury.

Benefits of Strength Training

There are many benefits to focusing on female strength training. First of all, you will develop stronger muscles and actually gain more muscle mass. Your new muscle can help you fight weight gain because your resting metabolism will be increased — meaning that you’ll burn more calories and the amount of weight that you gain from muscle mass will be less than the fat you burn off!

Strength training programs also help to strengthen your bones and make them denser. Most people stop adding density to their bones by their mid-twenties, but with a consistent female strength training program, you can increase bone density and help fight off the osteoporosis that so many older women suffer from. Having a stronger body also helps your overall health in many other ways. You can reduce your risk for chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, partially because strength training combats body fat.

Cardiovascular exercise and flexibility training are important as well and should be incorporated into your regular workout routines’ schedule. Last but definitely not least; strength training also can improve mental health. Exercise, as well as increased confidence from an improved body image can do wonders for combating depression.

Strength training programs for women are highly beneficial in creating stronger muscles and a healthier body and mind as a result. Consider starting slow in a program today to reap the many benefits of weight training.

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails. The actual infection is of the bed of the nail and of the plate under the surface of the nail, resulting in thickening and discoloration of the nail plate along with damage to the underlying nail bed.

Onychomycosis is the most common of all diseases of the nails. It’s estimated that in North America, the incidence is as high as 13% and that over 25 million Americans suffer from fungal toenails. The incidence of Onychomycosis is also greater in older adults, and up to 90% of the elderly may be affected. This infection is more common in men than women.

Those with chronic diseases such as diabetes and circulatory problems, and those with disorders that suppress the immune system are especially susceptible. Additional risk factors include trauma to the nails, family history, a warm climate and tight shoes.

Causes

Onychomycosis is caused by three types of fungi: dermatophytes, yeasts and nondermatophyte molds. Fungi are simple parasitic plant organisms that do not need sunlight to grow. Toenails are especially susceptible because fungi prefer dark damp places. Swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers typically harbor fungi. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, problems with the circulatory system, or immune deficiency disease are risk factors. A history of Athlete’s Foot and excess perspiration are also risk factors.

Diagnosis

There are numerous conditions that mimic the appearance of fungal toenails, and it is essential to confirm the diagnosis of fungus prior to initiating treatment. These other conditions include candida, contact dermatitis, lichen planus, psoriasis, subungual tumor, traumatic onychodystrophy, yellow nail syndrome, amelanotic melanoma, granuloma and melanoma. In order to confirm the diagnosis of onychomycosis, a careful history, clinical examination and culture or microscopic examination of the involved nail should be performed.

Onychomycosis can be present for years without causing pain or disturbing symptoms. Typically, the nail becomes thicker and changes to a yellowish-brown. Foul smelling debris may collect under the nail. The infection can spread to the surrounding nails and even the skin.

Treatment

Onychomycosis is very difficult and sometimes impossible to treat, and therapy is often long-term. In order for a fungus to grow it must produce a variety of enzymes, proteins which are responsible for acting as catalysts to promote reactions at the cellular level. Current therapy is designed to inhibit the enzymes within the fungus, and consists of topical treatments that are applied directly to the nails, and oral systemic medications. It is difficult for topical medications to penetrate the nail bed, because as the fungus overtakes the nail, it slowly dies and thickens. Subsequent damage to the nail bed results in decreased blood supply, making it difficult for oral medications to get to the infection in high enough concentration in order to destroy the fungus. Another factor which makes treatment difficult is recontamination of the nail since the fungus may thrive in the warm moist environment found inside shoes.

Topical therapy is reserved for only the mildest cases, and has about a 10-15% cure rate. First and second generation oral antifungals such as Griseofulvin and Ketoconazole are problematic, and there are typically high relapse rates of 50-85%. In addition, treatment must be continued for a long duration (10-18 months for toenails), with monthly laboratory monitoring for several side effects, including liver toxicity. Individuals taking these medications must also abstain from alcohol consumption.

In the past few years, newer oral antifungal agents have been developed, and include itraconazole (Sporanox), terbinafine (Lamisil), and fluconazole (Diflucan). These agents, when taken orally for as little as 12 weeks, bring about better cure rates and fewer side effects than either Griseofulvin or Ketoconazole. The most common side effect is stomach upset. Patients taking oral antifungal therapy should have a complete blood count and liver enzyme workup every four to six weeks. Terbinafine in particular has markedly less toxicity to the liver, one of the more severe side effects of the older agents, Griseofulvin and Ketoconazole.

Due to the relatively low success rate, risk of side effects and high cost of the prescription antifungals, numerous over the counter topical preparations have been developed and touted to purportedly destroy the fungus and restore normal nail growth. No scientific studies support the bold claims and patients’ personal experience touted by manufacturers and distributors of these treatments. These over the counter preparations and therapies include Tea Tree Oil, Tea Tree Oil mixed with Lavender Oil, Listerine mouthwash, diluted apple cider vinegar, Oregano and olive oil mixture, alpha hydroxyl acid creams, baking soda scrub, diluted Clorox bleach and Vick’s VapoRub. In the 29 years that I have been treating onychomycosis, I’ve encountered a number of patients who’ve related stories about a friend or relative who used one of these therapies with success, however, I have never had a patient claim that they personally had success although I have seen some positive results with Thymol and Miconazole (Fungoid tincture).

Laser Therapy

A new technology has recently been developed using a laser beam of near infrared light to destroy the fungus at the cellular level. This has shown great promise in the treatment of Onychomycosis and is currently pending FDA approval for treatment of this condition. Recent clinical studies using this modality have demonstrated a 70-80% cure rate. Anesthesia is not required when performing this procedure, and medications are typically not used in combination with laser therapy, thus minimizing side effects and issues of compliance.

The best advice is to consult your podiatrist to confirm the diagnosis of onychomycosis prior to initiating any treatment. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment should consist of medications or techniques that have been scientifically proven to inhibit the growth of the fungus. You should then be examined on a regular basis to monitor for possible side effects and to document the status of your nail condition.

Around the world, not more than 40 percent of babies under six months of age are breastfed. More than a million deaths could have been avoided had more mothers breastfed their babies.

Nowadays, most infants are being bottle fed, mainly because their mothers have to earn a living and do not have enough time for breastfeeding. Bottle feeding may provide convenience since any member of the household can do it even at the absence of the mother. Still, nothing beats the health benefits that breast milk feeding provides to both an infant and his/her mother. Its importance cannot be stressed enough, especially during the first six months of a child’s life.

If you have just given birth, one of the biggest decisions you have to make is whether to breastfeed or bottle feed your baby. Feeding your baby with breast milk ensures good health and survival as well as protects him or her from life-threatening diseases. The following are the major advantages you and your baby will get from breastfeeding.

Advantages for the Infant

Protection against diseases. Studies show that breast milk is effective in protecting babies against infection that causes a variety of illnesses and boosting their immune defenses. Breast milk contains antibodies that prevent the risk of respiratory diseases, stomach problems, respiratory problems, ear infections, and urinary infections. It also reduces the risk of more serious conditions such as asthma, anemia, leukemia, and diabetes.

Lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Statistics show that for every 87 deaths due to SIDS, only three are breastfed.

More efficient mental development. According to research, breastfed infants have a higher IQ than those who are bottle fed. So if you breastfeed your baby, he or she will become a smart kid years later.

Better dental health. Breastfed babies have lower risk of developing tooth decay and better chances of having straighter teeth when they grow up.

Reduced risk of childhood obesity

Enhanced bone density and well-developed facial structure

Advantages for the Mother

Reduced risk of certain diseases. Mothers who breastfeed their babies are less likely to develop ovarian cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis than those who feed their children with milk formulas.

Faster weight loss. This advantage has a great appeal on many nursing moms.

Savings. Breastfeeding won’t cost you a single penny, while bottle feeding requires that you spend regularly for milk products, milk bottles, and other bottle feeding supplies. If you breastfeed your child, you will save as much as $1,200 a year.

Convenience. When you breastfeed, you have nothing to prepare, wash, and sterilize.

Advantages for both Infant and Mother

After breastfeeding, your baby will feel secure and you will feel utmost pleasure for feeding your little one.

A strong emotional bond will be created between you and your baby.

With the many advantages that breastfeeding offers to both mothers and their newborns, it is no doubt the safest and most effective way to ensure the good overall health of your baby.
